Super Sub, Super Noah! Leeds United 1–0 Tottenham Hotspur

By Rob Callery · · Elland Road

There are substitutions, there are inspired substitutions, and then there’s sending Noah Okafor on to score the winner against Tottenham Hotspur barely two minutes later.

Oh, how we’ve missed that winning feeling!

Elland Road was rocking, Spurs were rattled, and Daniel Farke had pulled a rabbit out of the hat. Three points, a clean sheet and a Saturday afternoon to remember. Not a bad way to head into the international break!

A game of two halves

The first 45 minutes weren’t exactly a footballing masterpiece.

Leeds showed plenty of fight, but chances were difficult to come by. Tottenham weren’t offering much either, and the biggest talking points came courtesy of the officials.

First, Leeds had a penalty appeal waved away following a handball shout against Mateus Fernandes. Then Jayden Bogle found himself at the centre of controversy following a challenge on Mathys Tel.

VAR had a look, but Bogle escaped a red card. You can imagine the reaction from the Spurs supporters!

At half-time, it was goalless. Plenty of effort, not enough quality, and everything still to play for.

Leeds turn up the heat

Whatever Daniel Farke said at half-time, it worked.

Leeds came out with greater purpose, pressing Tottenham, winning possession and creating the better opportunities.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin was causing problems, Ao Tanaka got himself into promising positions, and Lukas Nmecha even hit the post, only for the flag to go up for offside.

Spurs goalkeeper Antonín Kinský was earning his wages, particularly with a superb save to deny Sean Longstaff.

You started to wonder whether it was going to be another one of those afternoons. The chances were coming, the pressure was building, but the scoreboard stubbornly refused to change.

Then Farke looked towards his bench.

Two minutes. One goal. Three points.

In the 77th minute, Harry Wilson and Noah Okafor entered the action.

Barely two minutes later, Elland Road erupted.

Melvin Bard’s throw-in found Wilson, who controlled the ball and laid it into Okafor’s path.

One touch to create the space, one beautiful finish across Kinský, and the ball was nestling in the bottom corner.

LEEDS UNITED 1–0 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR!

Shirt off. Celebrations everywhere. Absolute pandemonium.

And who could blame him? Okafor had barely had time to get his boots dirty before becoming the hero of the afternoon.

VAR briefly checked the goal for a possible handball by Wilson, but this time there was no heartbreak. Goal given.

Elland Road could celebrate all over again!

Hold your nerve, Leeds!

Of course, being Leeds United, we couldn’t simply enjoy a comfortable final ten minutes.

Tottenham pushed forward looking for an equaliser, and they had most of the ball. But James Trafford was there when needed, with four saves across the afternoon, and Leeds stood firm.

No late collapse. No cruel deflection. No last-minute VAR disaster.

Just the final whistle and three glorious points.

And after five league matches without a victory, that felt particularly sweet.

Star man: Noah Okafor

What more can you ask from a substitute?

Introduced with the game finely balanced, and scoring the winning goal almost immediately.

Okafor gave Leeds exactly what they needed: a little bit of magic, a clinical finish and a reminder of what he’s capable of.

Harry Wilson deserves plenty of credit for his contribution, while the entire team deserves praise for a much-improved second-half performance.

But today’s star man was never really in doubt. Noah Okafor. Super sub. Match winner. Elland Road hero.

The final whistle

This wasn’t simply about beating Tottenham.

It was about responding after a frustrating run of results. It was about showing that Leeds can compete, create chances and, crucially, finish the job.

Farke’s substitutions worked a treat, the defence delivered a clean sheet, and Leeds deserved the victory.

Spurs arrived on a winning run. They left with nothing.

Leeds United 1. Tottenham Hotspur 0. Super Noah saves the day. 💛💙🤍

My verdict: Farke’s changes won it: Okafor on, Okafor scores, winless run over.

Marching On Together.
